Mike Peyton Passes Away

Not many people have delved into the cartooning world of sailing and hence, Mike Peyton was surely a name that stood out in this segment. He was dubbed as the world’s greatest when it came to yachting cartoons. He passed away on January 25th which was five days after he turned 96. He was known as a modest and shy man who stayed away from the spotlight and did not seem affected by the esteem that many held him in as part of the sailing world.

With Mike passing away much comes to light about his life. Being from a mining family of Durham in England, he joined the Army at a young age and that is where his sketching skills were discovered. He spent time in a prisoner of war camps, but has sketched skills remained with him. He was inspired by graphics that were popular in the thirties in British comics.

Hence, his work is much influenced by such styles. However, when it came to sailing, Mike did not simply see boats and sketch them. He experienced sailing when he bought a sailing canoe about 12 feet and sailed it down the river Thames. Continue reading “Mike Peyton Passes Away”

New Zealand Sit Third At Toulon

Team New Zealand did not finish the opening day of the America’s Cup World series in Toulon, France like the way they started. This meant that they were pushed to the third position after day one of the World Series race. The Glenn Ashby’s New Zealand team was placed behind Sweden’s Artemis Racing and Team France.

There were great expectations from the New Zealand team as they had the Olympians gold medalists Blair Tuke and Peter Burling in their ranks. The New Zealand team was relatively happy with their show that they had put up on the first day of the Toulon America’s Cup World Series. They finished runners up in the first two races, then came sixth in the third race and closed with a third position in the final race of the day.

Ray Davies, the tactician of New Zealand team and owner of Croatian Yacht Charter said that the conditions were light, but testing. A wobbly third race from the team put them on the wrong end of the table, but the team came back nicely in the 4th race to reach an overall third position. He feels that the team is in good shape to take advantage of the Super Sunday when the points go double. Continue reading “New Zealand Sit Third At Toulon”

Tough racing situations offered a tactical 1st day of racing at Star Sailors League Lake Grand Slam arranged by Cercle de la Voile de Grandson in Switzerland. Clouds emerging above Jura Mountains meant that the arrival of the chill northerly wind, which is known as La Bise, interpreted as ‘the kiss’ that funnels down the valley between the Jura Mountains as well as the Swiss Prealps.
The first 2 races were arranged in a puffy 12-16 knots of breeze, but it was really not a lingering kiss, the last 2 races were battled out in lighter flukier situations that tested the concentration as well as will strength of 68 teams from twenty-two different nations.
There were several general recalls sorted out by Black flag starts as well as big-name offenders included Johannes Polgar & Markus Koy and Torben Grael & Guilherme De Almeida, both were declared to be on grade side in Race 2.
